Gorlero Avenue, the main av. of Punta del Este is where you will find commercial galleries, restaurants, cinemas, casinos, shops and many more attractions.
Artigas square, over Gorlero av. is the place where the popular handcraft market takes places. Throughout its many stands you can find handicrafts of an excellent quality and materials such as leather, stone, metal, glass, etc.
Casa Pueblo in Punta Del Este
This symbol of Punta del Este is a fascinating piece of art done by the Uruguayan painter and sculptor Carlos Páez Vilaró, its unique architecture and magic touch, Casa Pueblo comes out the whale (ballena an attractive touristic area) as one of the main attractive of the peninsula.
Its spontaneous construction was done during 36 years of great effort. It is universally consider as an “inhabitable sculpture”. Inside it, has got many rooms in front of the sea where every day exhibitions of sculptures, paintings and ceramic are done.
Besides, if you want it you have the possibility of staying at Club Hotel Casa Pueblo, an exclusive refuge of 70 apartments with spectaculars terraces from where you can appreciate the sea and the wonderful sunsets.
CASA PUEBLO
The Punta del Este Lighthouse
This lighthouse was built on the 17 of November of 1860 by Tomas Libarena with the intention of guide the navigators over the Atlantic Ocean and de la Plata river. To build it, a mixture of volcanic soil from Rome, which is apparently harder than concrete, was used. This is the reason why it is in such perfect conditions.
The lighthouse is 45 mts. tall and the crystal panels which are part of its illumination system where brought from Europe, France, works by electricity and in case of emergency it uses acetylene gas.
It is possible to climb it up through its 150 steps of its spiral stair.
LIGHTHOUSE
Gorriti Island in Punta del Este
This island of 21 hectares of surface is daily visited to enjoy its non comparable nature, its two beautiful beaches, Garden Port and Honda beach.
The island as a natural port “cares” all the ships which anchor close to it, besides, it is an spectacular area to practice water sports.
Nowadays has got thousands of pine trees due to the plantations that the engineer Romulo Rubbo did, his work was later continued by his daughter the engineer Selva Rubbo.
GORRITI ISLAND
Sea Wolf Island in Punta del Este
This one measures 41 hectares of rocky surface and it’s also the biggest colony of sea wolf in South America, in front of the oceanic beaches of Punta Del Este, 12 kms of the coast.
The island was discovered by Juan Díaz de Solís in 1516, it is said that part of the crew unloaded in its beach in order to get sweet water for themselves and also to hunt 66 sea wolfs, these were going to be their only food in their returning trip, they took the fur of the animals to sell it in the market of Sevilla.
LOBOS ISLAND
La Barra in Punta del Este
Some time ago, In the 40’s La Barra was a fishermen town but in those times the inhabitants of a close city, San Carlos started to build their houses for holidays there.
More commonly known as the “undulated bridge” it is a work done by the designer Leonel Viera in 1965, at the mouth of Maldonado creek.
The creek is ideal for nautical sports and sportive fishing. Ahead we find different places, El Tesoro resort, Montoya beach, Bikini beach and Manantiales beach, among others.
Nowadays these area has become an important touristic center with many services according to the visitors necessities.
LA BARRA
Sea Museum in Punta del Este
This museum is part of the private collection who in 1961 started to collect marine pieces of the whole world. Its building started in 1993 and it was opened the 15 of January 1996. Since then, it has grown it surface three times more than it was at the beginning.
It is situated in La Barra of Maldonado. In it you can find a collection of more than 10.000 species of local and worldwide marine fauna, different species of marine snail, corals, sea urchin, sea horses, sea stars, crabs, shell tortoise, crustacean, jaw of sharks, whales’ skeletons and many more.
